Naxos or Paros?

Naxos vs Paros: Naxos is the largest Cyclades island, Paros the nearer to Athens with the busier airport. Who each suits, ferry times and the 25-minute hop.

Updated October 2026

Naxos if you want the bigger island, with a mountain, inland villages and long sandy beaches. Paros if you want the shorter crossing from Athens, the busier airport, and Antiparos ten minutes across the water. The two sit side by side in the middle of the Cyclades, 25 to 30 minutes apart on SeaJets’ fast boats, so seeing both is easy.

Paros and Naxos sit side by side in the Cyclades; the choice comes down to pace and space.

No official body ranks one above the other, and the guides that mention them do so for different reasons. Lonely Planet sends families with young children to Naxos, “where kids can safely swim in shallow waters”, and names both islands, with Delos, as quieter alternatives to Mykonos. Condé Nast Traveller’s UK edition picks Paros for an authentic experience, and Condé Nast Traveler in the US credits it with “welcoming locals and long beaches”. GNTO, Greece’s national tourism organisation, calls Naxos “the largest and most fertile island of the Cyclades” and describes Paros as a mix of “cosmopolitan ambience” and Cycladic tradition.

Sources: GNTO; ELSTAT’s 2021 census; the HCAA’s 2025 airport statistics (passengers count arrivals and departures, residents included); ELIME, the Hellenic Ports Association, for cruise traffic; the Blue Star, SeaJets and Golden Star timetables; the Municipality of Paros.

On these counts Paros sees more traffic than Naxos, with more air passengers and more cruise passengers, from a smaller resident population.

Which is nicer, Paros or Naxos?

That depends on what the days are for:

  • Young children: Naxos, for the shallow water Lonely Planet mentions.
  • Walking and village days: Naxos. Mount Zas is the highest mountain in the Cyclades, and GNTO points to inland villages such as Apeiranthos, Halki and Filoti.
  • Food from the land: Naxos, where GNTO lists potatoes, citron, cheeses and wine among the island’s products.
  • Windsurfing: Paros. The municipality calls Chryssi Akti and Nea Chryssi Akti windsurf centres, and Nea Chryssi Akti hosted the World Windsurfing Championship in the 1990s.
  • Evenings out: Paros, where the municipality describes Naoussa, the island’s second-largest village and home to the largest fishing fleet in the Cyclades, as known for its nightlife.
  • A short trip from Athens: Paros, which is between 35 minutes and more than an hour nearer by ferry, depending on the operator.
  • A second island without a long crossing: Paros, with Antiparos a short ferry away.
  • Getting away from Mykonos-style crowds: either. Lonely Planet treats both as quieter alternatives to Mykonos.

What you would see on each

On Naxos, the Portara stands at the harbour entrance: the great marble doorway of an unfinished ancient temple, on an islet reached by a causeway. Above Chora is the Venetian Kastro, where the Glezos Tower is closed for restoration. The Archaeological Museum in Chora is free (09:00 to 14:00, closed on Tuesdays), and the Temple of Demeter at Sangri costs €5. GNTO also tells the myth that the young Zeus was raised in a cave on Mount Zas.

On Paros, the Panagia Ekatontapyliani in Parikia is, in GNTO’s words, “one of the oldest and most important examples of Byzantine ecclesiastical architecture in Greece”. It is a working church, with its big feast on 15 August, so visit it as one. Naoussa keeps parts of a Venetian bastion by its harbour, the Archaeological Museum costs €5 and closes on Tuesdays, and the windsurf beaches face Naxos across the channel.

Getting there, and between them

Neither island has international flights, so from abroad you connect in Athens or arrive by sea. Olympic Air and Sky Express fly from Athens to Paros, Olympic Air sells Athens to Naxos, and GNTO puts both flights at 45 minutes. Naxos airport had a record 2025, with traffic up 17.8% from January to November by the HCAA’s count.

By ferry, Paros is the nearer of the two on every operator’s timetable; the table above has the figures. Blue Star’s conventional ships call at both on the day route from Piraeus in winter as well as summer, while Fast Ferries’ link from Rafina reaches Paros only from 13 June to 13 September in 2026. Between the two islands SeaJets takes 25 to 30 minutes.

For Antiparos, the car ferries leave Pounta on Paros about every 15 minutes and take around 10; small boats from Parikia take about 30 minutes, according to the Municipality of Paros.

The wind matters here more than on most islands. The national weather service’s forecasting handbook names the waters between Paros and Tinos among the places where the summer meltemi is funnelled and strengthened. EMY’s long-term normals put Naxos’s prevailing July wind at 13.3 knots from the north, stronger than at Rhodes, Heraklion, Corfu or Samos, and it is stronger still in October (14.5 knots) and January (15.5). Small and high-speed craft are the first to be held in port when it blows.

Seeing both

Lonely Planet’s advice to island-hoppers is to stay within one island group and see two or three islands in a week, and these two make an easy pair: 25 to 30 minutes apart by SeaJets, and both on Blue Star’s day route from Piraeus. A third island is close at hand either way. From Paros it is Antiparos. From Naxos, GNTO routes travellers on to Amorgos by ferry, and Blue Star’s overnight boats from Piraeus to Amorgos call at Paros, Naxos and the Small Cyclades, the cluster Lonely Planet points couples to when they want quiet beaches without rows of umbrellas.

Which is more expensive, Naxos or Paros?

No official source compares their prices. What the law sets is the same on both: the climate resilience fee, charged per room per night, and a cruise-passenger fee of €5, €3 or €1 by season, a quarter of the rate at Mykonos and Santorini. Paros draws more flights and more cruise passengers, as the table shows, but traffic is not a price list. The featured experiences on the two island pages are different kinds of day, a full day on a boat on Paros and a half-day cooking class on Naxos, so their prices do not compare the islands either. The cheapest Greek islands looks at what does drive cost.

Antiparos or Naxos?

They are different sizes of choice. Antiparos, the ancient Oliaros, is a small island off Paros: 1,265 residents in 2021, a Chora that grew up around a Venetian castle and, on the islet of Saliagos, the oldest Neolithic settlement in the Cyclades, GNTO says. There are ruins of a large temple on Despotiko, the islet where the featured Paros boat day stops for lunch. Antiparos is reached by ferry from Paros, so a stay on Paros brings Antiparos with it. Naxos is a full island in its own right, with its own airport, mountain and villages.

Milos or Naxos?

Milos is a volcanic island in the south-west of the Cyclades, roughly midway between Piraeus and Crete. GNTO lists it among three islands “made for couples”, counting 80 beaches (Lonely Planet says more than 70), and describes Kleftiko as a cluster of sheer white volcanic rocks. Naxos is the one Lonely Planet suggests for families. Milos also keeps its cruise traffic small: the port fund caps cruise passengers at 1,500 a day at Adamas.

For the two best-known islands of the group, see Santorini or Mykonos; for where all of them sit, the map of the Greek islands.
