Crete or Santorini?

Crete vs Santorini: Crete for a long, varied stay, Santorini for the caldera and couples, or both by fast ferry. Size, live closures and the crossing.

Updated October 2026

Crete if you have a week or more and want variety. Santorini for a shorter trip built around the caldera, and the island every guide we checked picks for couples. You may not have to choose: the two are about 59 nautical miles apart, and from Crete a day trip by fast ferry gives you about five and a half hours on Santorini. One thing first, as of early October 2026: after storms, Crete’s Samaria Gorge is closed at both entrances until further notice, and Knossos shut early on 3 October because of the weather. The live status is set out below.

A wide beach of pale pink-tinged sand and shallow turquoise water stretching to a low rocky islet
Crete is big enough for a whole trip; Santorini is small enough to see from it in a day.

The guides split the two by purpose. All five sources we checked (GNTO, Greece’s national tourism organisation; Lonely Planet; Condé Nast Traveller in the UK; Condé Nast Traveler in the US; and Rick Steves) name Santorini for couples. Both Condé Nast editions pick Crete for families, and the US edition goes further: “If you’re unsure which Greek island is best for you … Crete is your best bet.” Lonely Planet files Crete under “wild canyons and Minoan wonders” and archaeology, and says it has “a well-deserved reputation as one of the most affordable destinations in the Mediterranean”.

If you are staying on Crete, the calendar below is Cretan Odyssey’s Santorini day trip from Heraklion: from $214 as of October 2026, rated 4.5 from 2,171 reviews. You exchange your voucher for ferry tickets at the Santorini Cruise desk beside the SeaJets kiosk in Heraklion port, or take the pickup offered from listed areas such as Agia Pelagia, Hersonissos, Malia and Sisi. The high-speed ferry takes about two hours each way on the listing’s timetable (out 08:00 to 10:00, back 15:30 to 17:30). On Santorini a coach takes the group from Athinios port to Oia and then to Fira, with about two hours in each; instead of Fira you can join the volcano and hot-springs boat, which SeaJets runs and which costs €20 on the spot. Food is not included, the trip is not suitable for wheelchair users, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before.

Live status, as of early October 2026

Crete has had severe storms and floods since 1 October 2026. The EU’s Copernicus emergency service was activated, the sea came over the old harbour of Chania, and part of the road to Sitia was washed into the sea.

  • Samaria Gorge is closed at both entrances “until further notice”, says NECCA, the agency that runs the national park; it will reopen once inspections are finished. In a normal year the gorge may open from 10 April to 31 October, on a date NECCA sets (19 May in 2026). The ticket has been €10 since 2025, under-18s and over-65s go free, walkers must enter between 07:00 and 13:00, and everyone must be out by 18:00. Do not plan on it this autumn.
  • Knossos closed from 14:00 on 3 October for the weather. Its ticket has been €20 since 1 April 2025, and its closing time steps down every half-month from September: 18:00 from 16 October, then winter hours of 08:30 to 17:00 from 1 November. Since 12 July 2025 it has been on UNESCO’s World Heritage List as one of the six Minoan Palatial Centres, with Phaistos, Malia, Zakros, Zominthos and Kydonia.
  • Earlier in the year, a wildfire in the Rethymno area from 29 July 2026 led to about 8,000 people being evacuated overnight; they were later allowed home.

On Santorini, the restrictions that followed the 2025 earthquake swarm have mostly been lifted. Under a decision in force until 31 March 2027, the Old Port of Fira, the cable car and Ammoudi below Oia are open, while the footpath from Ammoudi to Cape Agios Nikolaos and one zone of the Old Port stay closed. Red Beach has been closed to visitors since 2013 because of falling rock.

Conditions can change from week to week. The calendars on this page and on the island pages show the dates that are actually on sale.

How long each island needs

No official body sets a right length of stay, so treat this as our advice: a week covers one half of Crete well, and the whole island needs ten days or more. It is about 260 km long, and the usual bases split it in three: Chania and Rethymno for the west (Samaria, Balos, Elafonisi), Heraklion for the centre (Knossos, Phaistos, the main airport and the Santorini ferries) and Agios Nikolaos for the east (Elounda and Spinalonga). GNTO singles out Chania’s old town and its Venetian harbour with the Egyptian lighthouse. A Samaria crossing, when the gorge is open, takes a whole day: in by 13:00, out by 18:00, then a boat, because no road reaches the southern exit at Agia Roumeli.

Santorini needs less. Lonely Planet’s advice to island-hoppers is two or three islands a week, which leaves two or three days for Santorini: time for the caldera villages, a day on the water and Akrotiri, which closes at 15:30 on Mondays and Thursdays.

Getting between Crete and Santorini

Two companies sail between Heraklion and Santorini. SeaJets’ high-speed boats take about 1 h 35 to 1 h 40 and Blue Star’s conventional ferry about 3 h 15 to 3 h 50, on the timetables published for October 2026; the day trip above allows about two hours each way. The route runs all year, with the number of sailing days changing through the year. Blue Star’s ship works a long line (Piraeus, Santorini, Anafi, Heraklion, Sitia, Kasos, Karpathos, Chalki and Rhodes), which also makes it the sea link from Crete to Rhodes. Minoan Lines does not call at Santorini in 2026: its domestic routes are Piraeus to Heraklion, Piraeus to Milos and Heraklion to Milos.

Sailings depend on the weather, and operators cancel or reschedule when the wind is up; SeaJets advises leaving a spare day before a flight in July and August. cretedaytriptosantorini.com covers the day trips from Crete to Santorini in more detail.

Which should you pick?

  • A week or more, and variety: Crete, with Knossos and the other Minoan palaces, the gorges of the west and more than 1,000 km of coastline in GNTO’s count.
  • Couples: Santorini, the pick of all five sources.
  • Families: Crete, the pick of both Condé Nast editions.
  • Beaches: Crete, the beach pick of Condé Nast Traveller’s UK editors. GNTO describes Santorini’s beaches as black, red and white sand, but Red Beach itself is closed.
  • Archaeology: both. Crete has Knossos and the Minoan palaces; Santorini has Akrotiri, the prehistoric town destroyed by the 16th-century BC eruption, whose “Spring” fresco is now in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens.
  • A tight budget: Crete, on Lonely Planet’s word.
  • A short trip: Santorini, a 50-minute flight from Athens. Crete’s ferries from Piraeus run overnight and its distances are long.
  • Both: base yourself on Crete and take the day trip pinned above.

Is Crete really worth visiting?

It is the island the guides recommend most widely: for families (both Condé Nast editions), for archaeology (Lonely Planet), for beaches (Condé Nast Traveller UK) and for budgets (Lonely Planet), and the US Condé Nast calls it the “best bet” for anyone unsure. It is also the busiest: Heraklion airport handled 4,050,543 passengers off international flights in 2025, the most of any island airport in Greece. The catch this autumn is the weather, so read the live status above before you plan a day around Samaria or Knossos.

Crete or Corfu?

Corfu, the other big island people weigh against Crete, is an Ionian island, reached by ferry from Igoumenitsa on the mainland rather than from the ports of Athens. By EMY’s long-term normals Corfu has the hotter July afternoons, a mean maximum of 31.2 °C against 28.9 °C at Heraklion and 30.7 °C at Chania, but far more autumn rain: 140.4 mm in October, against 59.4 mm at Heraklion. Heraklion is the milder in January, at 15.3 °C against 13.9 °C. Those normals cover 1955 to 2010, and recent summers have run hotter: July 2024 was the hottest July in Greece since 1960.
