Which Greek Island Is the Cheapest to Visit?

Lonely Planet calls Crete affordable, and day tours cost least on Zakynthos, Rhodes, Corfu and Crete. What moves the bill more: the season, the room levy, ferries and flights.

Updated October 2026

Of the five guides we read, only Lonely Planet talks about cost, and the island it calls affordable is Crete. Its “How to Visit Crete on a Budget” (July 2026) says Crete has “a well-deserved reputation as one of the most affordable destinations in the Mediterranean”. Its Greece budget guide (June 2026) says the highest concentration of hostels is in Athens, Thessaloniki and on Crete, Corfu, Zakynthos and Rhodes, calls Santorini and Mykonos “A-lister” islands, and warns that bargains are hard to find from July to September.

No official body publishes room prices island by island, so no one can name the cheapest island to the euro. Day-tour prices are the one cost we could line up, and they lean the same way. In October 2026 the median starting price of top-rated tours ran from about $42 on Zakynthos (Zante) to $152 on Milos, with Rhodes, Corfu and Crete near the bottom and the five Cyclades islands we checked at the top.

On Crete, the least expensive tour listed here is Quality Travel’s bus day from the Chania area to Elafonisi: from $29 as of October 2026, rated 4.7 from 2,754 reviews. It collects you from set pickup points around Chania (door-to-door costs €9 more), leaves you four hours at the beach and stops for a wine tasting on the way back. The beach charges no entry. Food, drinks and umbrella hire (€9 plus a €5 deposit) are extra.

Powerd by GetYourGuide

Crete has had storms and floods since 1 October 2026. As of early October 2026, Samaria Gorge is closed at both entrances until further notice, and Knossos closed early on 3 October for the weather. The calendar shows which days are actually running.

Day-tour prices, island by island

Tours are the one price we could compare across the islands. The figures below are the median starting price of the top-rated tours on each island’s page, checked in October 2026. They show the shape of the market, not what you will pay.

Hydra is left out: its page had too few tours for a median, and the island has no airport.

Paros, Naxos and Milos had no international flights in 2025, so reaching them adds a domestic flight or a ferry from Athens to whatever you pay to get to Greece. And a low “from” price can leave something out:

  • The land-and-sea tour featured on the Zakynthos page, from $40, does not include its boat: €25 a head on the glass-bottom boat (€15 for children aged 3 to 11) or €50 by speedboat, paid in cash on the day. It sees Navagio (Shipwreck Beach) from the clifftop and from the boat; landing and swimming there are banned until 31 October 2026.
  • The Lindos bus from Rhodes, from $18, leaves out the €20 acropolis ticket. See dates
  • The Spinalonga day featured on the Crete page, from $43, leaves out the €20 Spinalonga ticket.

What moves the bill more than the island

When you go

The hotel figures point the same way as Lonely Planet’s warning about July to September. Average hotel occupancy in 2025 was 55% in May, 86% in August and 49% in October, according to ITEP, the research institute of the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels. Lonely Planet also reports more travellers choosing May, September and October because of summer heatwaves.

Winter brings the lower levy rates below, but a lot closes. 62% of Greek hotels are seasonal, and in 2025 they opened for 5.8 months on average. Some ferry links run only in high summer (Fast Ferries sailed Rafina to Paros only from 13 June to 13 September 2026), Spinalonga closes from 1 November to 31 March except to groups by request, and Mykonos airport’s runway is shut every Thursday from 19 November 2026 to 18 March 2027, apart from a few holiday dates.

The room levy

Paid stays carry the climate resilience fee, which replaced the old overnight-stay tax in 2024. It is charged per room or apartment per night, not per person; the property collects it against a special receipt, and it carries no VAT. These are the rates in force since 1 January 2025; we found no change for 2026.

Where you sleepApril to OctoberNovember to March
Hotel, 1 or 2 stars, or a rented room€2€0.50
Hotel, 3 stars€5€1.50
Hotel, 4 stars€10€3
Hotel, 5 stars€15€4
Short-term rental€8€2

A week in a 3-star room in July adds €35 per room, a 5-star €105 and a short-term rental €56 (our arithmetic). The rates are the same on every island, so the levy follows the room you pick, not the island.

The cruise fee

Only cruise passengers pay this one; air and scheduled-ferry arrivals do not. Since 21 July 2025 every cruise passenger pays it at each Greek port where they go ashore, whatever their age: €20 at Santorini and Mykonos from June to September, €12 in April, May and October and €4 from November to March, and €5, €3 or €1 at every other port. The cruise line pays it and normally passes it on in the fare.

Getting there and between islands

Crete, Rhodes, Corfu, Zakynthos, Kefalonia, Santorini and Mykonos all take international flights. For Paros, Naxos and Milos you add a domestic flight (Olympic Air flies to all three from Athens) or a ferry. None of our sources prices the flights. The only ferry fares they give are SeaJets’ Piraeus to Mykonos from €80 (its 2026 guide, indicative for May) and Saronic Ferries’ conventional boats from Piraeus to Aegina from €12 and to Poros from €17 one way. Crete and Rhodes are 9 h 30 and 15 h 40 from Piraeus on the conventional ferries; Greek island hopping has every crossing time.

Tickets at the big sites

The headline sites now cost €20 each: Knossos, Spinalonga, the Acropolis of Lindos and the Grand Master’s Palace in Rhodes (all raised in April 2025), plus Akrotiri on Santorini and Delos, where the boat from Mykonos is another €25 return. Smaller ones cost less: Phaistos €15, the Catacombs of Milos €10, Melissani cave on Kefalonia €10 and Drogarati €6, the Achilleion on Corfu €7 while only its gardens are open, and the Archaeological Museum of Naxos nothing. State sites are free on 6 March, 18 April, 18 May, the last weekend of September and 28 October. On Santorini the cable car costs €10 each way; climbing the 587 steps of the path costs nothing.

Money questions people ask

Is Crete or Corfu cheaper?

Close, and no official figure settles it. Lonely Planet calls Crete affordable and puts hostels on both. Day tours had medians of $61 on Crete and $56 on Corfu (Kerkyra) in October 2026, and both take international flights: Corfu at its own airport, Crete at Heraklion and Chania.

Which is cheaper, Santorini or Mykonos?

Lonely Planet calls both “A-lister” islands. They charge cruise passengers the same fee, the room levy is the same everywhere, and day tours cost less on Santorini: a median of $84 against $109 in October 2026.

Where is like Santorini but cheaper?

No source we read names one. Lonely Planet’s quieter alternative to Santorini is Folegandros, which has no airport (fly to Milos, then a ferry of 55 minutes to 2 h 50), but quieter is not cheaper, and none of our sources prices it. Milos, the other volcanic island in the table, had the highest tour median, $152.

Is Naxos or Paros more expensive?

About even on tours: medians of $101 on Naxos and $98 on Paros in October 2026. Neither had international flights in 2025, both have airports with flights from Athens, and they are 25 to 30 minutes apart by SeaJets. Naxos vs Paros compares the two.

What does a week in Greece cost?

No official source prices a week. The Bank of Greece’s 2025 figures come closest: 37.98 million travellers from abroad spent €23.6 billion in Greece over 233 million nights. That works out at about €620 a traveller and about €100 a night, or roughly €710 for seven nights (our arithmetic). It is an average for all of Greece, Athens and the mainland included, and it leaves out the flight there, which none of our sources prices.

Each island has its own page with a featured tour and calendar: Crete, Rhodes, Corfu, Zakynthos, Kefalonia, Santorini, Paros, Naxos, Mykonos, Milos and Hydra. For the smaller islands with no page of their own, see the least touristy Greek islands.
