Which Greek Islands Are Best for Families?

Crete is the island two guides pick for families, and Lonely Planet adds Naxos and Syros. Then the practical part: transfers, wind, heat and the age limits tour by tour.

Updated October 2026

No island wins outright, but Crete is the one named most often: two of the five guides we checked pick it for families. Both Condé Nast titles choose Crete, and the US edition says that if you are unsure which island suits you, “Crete is your best bet”. Lonely Planet sends families to Naxos, “where kids can safely swim in shallow waters”, and recommends Syros “especially for families”. Condé Nast Traveler (US) adds Kefalonia, for “laid-back family vacations”. GNTO, the national tourism organisation, lists “the islands of the Aegean and Ionian sea, Crete, Halkidiki” on its family page without choosing among them, and Rick Steves names no family island. With children the practical facts usually settle it: the length of the transfer, the wind, the midday heat and the age limits on the boat days you want.

A calm, sheltered sandy bay with very shallow clear water and tamarisk trees along the back of the beach
Calm, shallow water and short transfers matter more with children than which island it is.

As of early October 2026, Crete is dealing with storms and floods that began on 1 October. Samaria Gorge is closed at both entrances “until further notice”, says NECCA, which runs the park, and Knossos closed early on 3 October because of the weather. When Samaria reopens, under-18s walk it free, but the crossing takes a whole day: walkers must start by 13:00 and be out by 18:00. Each tour’s calendar shows the dates actually on sale.

Airports and ferries with children

The shortest trips are to islands with international airports. Crete has two big ones: Heraklion, where 4.05 million passengers got off international flights in 2025, and Chania, with 1.58 million. Heraklion is state-run; Chania is one of Fraport Greece’s airports. Crete is about 260 km long, so choose the airport by where you will stay, Chania for the west with Balos and Elafonisi, Heraklion for the centre and Knossos.

Kefalonia (Cephalonia) also takes international flights, with 376,837 passengers getting off them in 2025, and its mainland ferries are short: about 1 h 30 from Kyllini to Poros (the Kefalonia port, not the Saronic island) or 3 h 15 from Patras to Sami.

Naxos and Syros had no international flights in 2025, so the trip runs through Athens. Olympic Air flies Athens to Naxos in about 45 minutes. By sea, Blue Star’s conventional ferry from Piraeus takes 5 h 20 to 5 h 50, SeaJets about 4 h 20, and Golden Star sails from Rafina, close to Athens airport, in 4 h 20. Crete and Rhodes are long crossings from Piraeus, 9 h 30 overnight to Heraklion and from 15 h 40 to Rhodes, so families short of time fly.

Wind, heat and water

The meltemi, the northerly summer wind of the Aegean, is what most often cancels a family boat day. It sets in over the central and south-east Aegean in June and is most frequent in July and August; in 2025 it was strong on 24 of the 30 days of June and 21 of the 31 days of August. Port authorities stop sailings in gales, usually from force 7 or 8 on the Beaufort scale, and small or fast boats stop earlier. The listings say as much. The Kefalonia boat “may be canceled due to poor weather conditions”, and the Koufonisia cruise from Naxos reschedules or refunds when high winds cancel it. SeaJets advises a spare day before flights home in July and August.

The Ionian side is calmer in summer. In EMY’s long-term July averages the wind blows at 3.6 knots at Corfu and 6.6 at Argostoli on Kefalonia, against 13.3 at Naxos. The trade-off comes in autumn, when Corfu averages 140.4 mm of rain in October and Naxos 38.6 mm.

Heat matters more than wind with small children. The warmest stretch, says EMY, is the last ten days of July and the first ten of August, with average highs of 29 to 35 °C, and July 2024 was the hottest July in Greece since 1960. Naxos has the lowest July average high of the island stations we compared, 27.1 °C; Heraklion averages 28.9 °C, Argostoli 29.3 °C and Corfu 31.2 °C. Those averages cover 1955 to 2010, so expect hotter. Archaeological sites close at midday in a heatwave only when the regional ephorate decides: Lindos and the Kos Asklepieion shut from 12:00 to 17:00 on 25 and 26 July 2025, while on 13 June 2024 Knossos stayed open as other Cretan sites closed. Plan sites for the morning. The sea warms to about 26 °C along the coast in summer (HCMR).

Summer is also fire season, from 1 May to 31 October. Crete and Kefalonia both had wildfires in 2026: in the Rethymno region of Crete from 29 July, when about 8,000 people were evacuated overnight and later allowed home, and on Kefalonia near Pastra on 1 August. Civil protection publishes a daily fire-risk map, and 112 sends location-based alerts to phones.

No guide tells families to avoid an island. Plan around the meltemi in the Cyclades in July and August, the midday heat, and the islands short of water: Patmos and Leros have been under water-scarcity emergencies since November 2025, extended in 2026, and Astypalaia since May 2026.

Is Rhodes or Crete better for families?

By the guides, Crete: two pick it for families and none picks Rhodes, which Lonely Planet lists for its medieval history. In practice the two are alike. Both have big international airports, with 3.06 million passengers off international flights at Rhodes (Rodos to Greeks) in 2025, and both are long sails from Piraeus. The featured trip on the Rhodes page is a fast boat from Mandraki Harbour in Rhodes Town, with other boarding points down the east coast, to Symi and a swim stop at St George’s Bay. Its listing includes swimming noodles and states no age limit.

Is Mykonos or Santorini better for families?

Neither is a family pick in any of the five guides, which name Santorini for couples and Mykonos for nightlife. Families go all the same, and a few facts help. The boat from Mykonos to Delos costs €25 return, €12 for children aged 6 to 12 and nothing for under-5s; the site ticket, €20, is separate, and swimming is not allowed on Delos. On Santorini, Sunset Oia’s 20-guest luxury catamaran supplies flotation devices and snorkel gear but is not for pregnant guests. Santorini vs Mykonos compares the two.
