Which Greek Island Is Best for a Honeymoon?
All five guides we checked name Santorini for couples, and GNTO adds Milos and Amorgos. What that choice costs in crowds, fees and timing, and where the quieter honeymoons are.
Santorini, if you go by the guides: all five we checked name it for couples. GNTO, the Greek National Tourism Organisation, says couples choose it for weddings and honeymoons. Lonely Planet labels it best for couples, both Condé Nast titles make it their couples pick, and Rick Steves calls it a “romantic island”. The only other call all five make is Mykonos for nightlife. Santorini is also one of the two busiest cruise islands in Greece, which matters more on a honeymoon than on most trips, so below are the trade-offs and the quieter islands the same guides name: Milos and Amorgos from GNTO, Kefalonia and the Small Cyclades from Lonely Planet.

For a Santorini evening, the calendar below is Sunset Oia’s catamaran cruise with a barbecue dinner, from $84 as of October 2026 and rated 4.6 from 7,314 reviews. It boards at Ammoudi, the small port below Oia, and the price covers hotel pickup and drop-off, the dinner and drinks; beer and towels are extra. The cruise lasts about five hours, with stops at the hot springs, off Red Beach and at White Beach, which the listing says can only be reached from the sea. The catamarans do not moor at either beach. Pick a sunset departure and the evening ends at sea inside the caldera. It is a big boat, though: the listing allows 50 to 55 guests. Free cancellation runs to 24 hours before.
If 55 is too many, the Santorini page lists two smaller evenings. Sunset Oia’s luxury catamaran takes 20 guests at most and includes hotel pickup (from $124, rated 4.8 from 4,386 reviews). A sunset wine tour for 10 people at most visits three wineries and ends at Santo Wines, on the cliff above the caldera; it runs from May to October (from $203, rated 4.9 from 916 reviews).
What the guides say about couples
- GNTO’s “Islands Made for Couples” page names three. Santorini, for “undoubtedly the most renowned sunset in Greece”, watched from Oia, Fira and Imerovigli. Milos, “a beloved one to all, but especially to couples”. Amorgos, “a tranquil romantic refuge”.
- Lonely Planet labels Santorini best for couples (September 2026) and gives Kefalonia, which it spells Kefallonia, the label “rugged romance” (July 2026). For “couples desperately seeking serenity and umbrella-free beaches” it points to the Small Cyclades: Schinoussa, Donousa, Iraklia and Koufonisia (December 2025).
- Condé Nast Traveller’s UK edition makes Santorini its editors’ pick for couples (May 2026).
- Condé Nast Traveler’s US edition picks Santorini for couples and labels it the island for “honeymooners”. It also credits Sifnos with “a sizzling food scene and romantic hotels” (March 2026).
- Rick Steves’s Greece overview names only three islands. It calls Santorini a “romantic island” but rates Hydra higher, as an “idyllic island getaway, convenient to Athens”.
Is Santorini a good honeymoon spot?
For the sunset over the caldera, yes, and it is the only couples pick the five guides share. Santorini (Thira in Greek, Thera in antiquity) has three costs to weigh: crowds, fees and the after-effects of the 2025 earthquakes.
The crowds come off the cruise ships. Santorini received 1,203,052 cruise passengers in 2025, second among the islands only to Mykonos with 1,222,748. The Port Fund caps cruise passengers at 8,000 a day, and from 2026 it counts every ship at 100% of its capacity, up from 80%. The cap works through berth scheduling months ahead, not at the quay. Since July 2026 the big ships have had to land 70% of their passengers at the Old Port of Fira and 30% at Athinios.
Two fees apply. Since 21 July 2025 every cruise passenger landing on Santorini or Mykonos pays €20 from June to September, €12 in April, May and October and €4 from November to March, whatever their age; other Greek ports charge €5, €3 or €1. You don’t pay it if you arrive by plane or ferry. Hotels add the climate resilience fee, which is charged per room per night, not per person: from April to October it is €2 at a one- or two-star hotel, €5 at three stars, €10 at four and €15 at five, with lower rates from November to March.
The earthquake swarm that began on 27 January 2025 emptied much of the island for a time. More than 10,000 residents and visitors left in early February, and the state of emergency declared that month was extended four times, the last on 2 July 2025. Officials first described the swarm as tectonic; peer-reviewed studies published in 2025 trace it to a magmatic dike intrusion, magma forced into the crust near Anydros, between Santorini and Amorgos. Airport traffic fell 16% in 2025, then rose 4.5% from January to August 2026.
Under the decision in force until 31 March 2027, the Old Port of Fira, the cable car, Ammoudi village and the path from Ammoudi up to Oia are open. The footpath from Ammoudi to Cape Agios Nikolaos and “area A” of the Old Port stay closed, and the road down to Ammoudi is shut to most vehicles, a landslide measure that dates from May 2024. Red Beach has been closed to visitors since 2013 because of rockfalls; more fell in February 2025, and boats stay offshore.
Choosing the month
Greece’s warm, dry season runs from April to October, according to EMY, the national weather service. The hottest stretch is the last ten days of July and the first ten of August, with average highs of 29 to 35 °C, and recent summers run above those averages: July 2024 was the hottest July in Greece since 1960. Lonely Planet notes that more travellers now pick May, September and October to avoid the heatwaves. Hotels are emptier then too. Greek hotel occupancy averaged 55% in May and 49% in October 2025, against 86% in August.
The wind points the same way. The meltemi, the northerly summer wind of the Aegean, is most frequent in July and August and weakens in September; in 2025 it was strong on 24 of the 30 days of June. It brings sailing bans, as on 14 August 2026, when ships were held in Rafina and Lavrio until 16:00, and it rearranges boat days. The catamaran’s own listing says its stops can change without notice in bad weather, and SeaJets advises leaving a spare day before a flight home in July and August.
Winter is a different trip. ITEP, the hotel chamber’s research institute, counts 62% of Greek hotels as seasonal, and in 2025 they opened for 5.8 months on average, so far fewer are open in the off season. Some ferry links run only in high summer: Fast Ferries’ link from Rafina to Paros ran only from 13 June to 13 September 2026.
Mykonos or Santorini?
All five guides send couples to Santorini and nightlife to Mykonos, and for a honeymoon that is the useful line between them. GNTO describes Mykonos’s beach bars and clubs; for the caldera and its sunset, Santorini. On cost the official charges are identical, with the same €20 summer cruise fee and the same room fee, and Lonely Planet calls both “A-lister” islands, adding that bargains are hard to find from July to September. We found no official comparison of prices on the two. Santorini vs Mykonos compares them in full, and the cheapest islands covers budgets.
Are there islands to avoid?
None of the five guides tells couples to avoid an island. What goes wrong is timing: the Cyclades in a strong meltemi week when your plans hang on boat days, or a small island out of season. Water is short on a few. Patmos and Leros have been under water-scarcity emergencies since November 2025, extended in 2026, and Astypalaia since May 2026, by decisions of the Environment Ministry.
Quieter islands for couples
Milos is GNTO’s second couples island. Its beaches number 80 on that page and “more than 70” on GNTO’s own Milos page and in Lonely Planet. Cruise traffic is small, 42,097 passengers in 2025, and the port fund keeps a cap of 1,500 a day at Adamas. Flights are domestic only, about 40 minutes from Athens with Olympic Air or Sky Express, and SeaJets sails from Piraeus in 2 h 30. The featured trip on the Milos page is a full-day sail from Adamas in three boats of up to 25 people each. At Kleftiko, boats must keep 25 m from the cliffs, and swimming inside that zone is banned all year.
Amorgos, GNTO’s third, has no airport. GNTO’s route is a flight to Naxos and then a ferry of 1 h 15 to 6 hours; Blue Star’s overnight sailings leave Piraeus at 23:30 and reach Aegiali at about 07:10 or Katapola at about 08:50, calling at Paros, Naxos and the Small Cyclades on the way. Hozoviotissa Monastery stands on a cliff 300 m above the sea, 350 steps up, and tradition dates it to 1088. It is a monastery, so dress for a place of worship.
The Small Cyclades lie on that route between Naxos and Amorgos. From Naxos, a full-day boat from Agia Anna stops at Kato Koufonisi, spends about two and a half hours on Ano Koufonisi and swims at the Rina cave on the way back (from $86, rated 4.8 from 848 reviews). To stay on the islands, take the ferry.
Kefalonia (Cephalonia) is Lonely Planet’s “rugged romance”, and of these islands the easiest to reach from abroad: 376,837 passengers got off international flights at its airport in 2025. The featured boat on the Kefalonia page leaves Argostoli harbour for White Rocks beach, the islet of Vardiani and the red sand of Xi beach. Myrtos beach had a landslide on 9 July 2026, and signs ban sitting or setting up umbrellas near the foot of the cliff.
Sifnos and Hydra are the other names in the guides. Sifnos, which Condé Nast Traveler credits with romantic hotels and a food scene, has no airport, and the conventional ferry from Piraeus takes about five hours. Hydra, which Rick Steves rates above Santorini, allows no cars or motorbikes (GNTO) and is 1 h 15 from Piraeus by the fastest direct boat, close enough for a first or last night near Athens.
Each island page has its own featured tour and calendar:
